“While we will continue to promote our company by participating in Delaware County Chamber of Commerce events, serving on committees and presenting marketing seminars, we also chose to enhance, update and develop our site to use it as our sales assistant,” she said of the Web site.

McNitt began her firm as an offshoot to what she did as an associate publisher of BFL&S, now Print Professional, in the 1980s. She was very active in the trade association for the label manufacturing industry and did freelance work for them.

She then was let go and decided to use the skills God gave her.

“You start out on a shoestring like everybody else,” McNitt recalled. “My former clients became my clients.”

She still has her first check dated 1992 from Herald Multiforms of North Carolina.

In 1999, several of her businesses closed and she was diagnosed with colon cancer.

“I had to totally change focus,” McNitt said. “I got real involved in the (Delaware County) Press Club and the chamber.”
At the time, she wasn’t certain if she’d keep her business, but after making contacts with local businesses, she’s providing the service she has since she’s started.

“People don’t get what marketing people do,” she said in her office packed with binders and files.

As an entrepreneur, she said she’s responsible for the many aspects of running a business.

“It’s not just one thing,” McNitt said. “It’s everything.”

She keeps a file for every project that contains copies of newsletters and spreadsheets of all the work she’s done for every client, including a history of the content in each piece of marketing.

McNitt said the key is details, whether it’s adding new material to newsletters or keeping the copy error-free.

“That’s me, Diane Details,” she said. “I refuse to have a typo. I just refuse. I can’t stomach it.”

She smiles about the piles of files and binders around her.

“It helps me keep track,” McNitt said, showing that each has a copy of each product she’s crafted, so it’s never repeated twice.

“I try to give my clients’ newsletter value,” she said as she held one. “This is about this company and making them look good and getting them sales.”

In August, she did the Lance Armstrong Foundation walk at Montgomery County Community College and had a chance opportunity to meet him.

Previously, she had designed a cancer comfort card, a plastic wallet-sized card with tips on how to help comfort loved ones coping with the illness from acknowledging their diagnosis to making healthy meals.

McNitt said several of the cards are at the Lance Armstrong Foundation and said no words could describe what it was like to meet him.

For her, it’s all about satisfying her customers.

“I love to see the thrill of something I did be published, knowing that what I did had an impact for my client,” she said. “I love connecting people with people.”

After 23 years planning and promoting local trade shows, expos and national conventions for employers, clients and non-profit organizations, Diane McNitt, McNitt Marketing, literally "practiced what she preaches" in having her own booth — the Fiesta Siesta — in coordination with the "Fiesta" theme at the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce's 26th annual B-to-B expo.

Each year McNitt conducts a trade show marketing seminar for the Delco Chamber members to give them affordable, effective and creative ideas. Diane focuses on non-profit organizations and the small business owners' needs so they won't spend unnecessary money, will present a pleasing display and receive a good return on their investment. Many of Diane's former "students" have won awards bestowed by the Chamber for either Most Creative, Best Small Business, Best Large Business, and Most Informative.

McNitt Marketing has designed booths for established businesses such as Elko Associates, new businesses like Arbonne, and non-profits, like the Cardinal Krol Center.

A Delco Chamber member since 1992, Diane was named the 2000 "Small Business Person of the Year," served on the Chamber board and is active with the Small Business Committee.
